How the visit goes

   Cleaning and shade assessment

   Only clean teeth are whitened: under plaque the gel works unevenly. The dentist records the starting shade on a scale so the result has something to be compared with.

   Gum protection and gel

   The gum is covered with a protective barrier and the gel is applied to the enamel. Fillings and crowns do not lighten — if they sit in the smile zone, the dentist will say so beforehand.

   Activation and control

   The gel is activated with a lamp in several rounds, with the shade checked in between. The procedure stops once the planned result is reached.

After the procedure

• Keep to a "white diet" for two days: no coffee, tea, wine, beetroot, soy sauce or berries.
• Do not smoke for two days — tobacco pigment soaks into warmed enamel fastest of all.
• Increased sensitivity in the first days is expected: it passes and does not mean harm to the enamel.
• If the dentist prescribed a remineralising gel, use the full course — it settles the sensitivity.
• The result lasts two to three years. Longer for those who do not smoke and come for a cleaning twice a year.

Does whitening damage the enamel?

The gel lightens pigment within the enamel without dissolving it. Sensitivity after the procedure is a temporary reaction, not damage.

Do fillings and crowns whiten too?

No, they keep their colour. If such work sits in the smile zone, it is replaced after whitening to match the new shade — the dentist will warn you before starting.

How long does the result last?

Two to three years. Longer for people who do not smoke, drink coffee in moderation and come for a cleaning twice a year.

What is the white diet and how long does it last?

For the first two days the enamel is open and picks up colour easily, so anything that stains comes off the menu: coffee, tea, red wine, beetroot, tomato and soy sauces, berries, turmeric. Smoking too. After that you can go back to normal, though the first fortnight is better kept moderate: the result is still settling.

Do whitening strips and supermarket pastes work?

Pastes do not whiten, they scrub off surface stain: the tooth gets cleaner, not lighter than its own shade. Abrasive ones used daily also wear the enamel down. Strips are weaker than in-chair gel and sit unevenly, so dark bands are left at the gum line and between the teeth. And neither checks first for caries or cracks — whitening over those is not allowed.
