The first visit to the head dentist is the first and most important step towards a healthy smile. The consultation includes a thorough examination of the mouth with an intraoral camera, an assessment of every tooth and the gums, and a review of your X-rays. Afterwards you receive a printed treatment plan with costs and several alternatives to suit your budget, plus full advice on what Tervisekassa covers. If your case involves several areas at once — implants, orthodontics and prosthetics, for instance — we hold a joint consultation: the dentists see you together and agree on a single plan. That avoids the situation where one specialist's work has to be redone to fit another's requirements.

How the visit goes

Talking
The dentist asks what is bothering you and what you expect from treatment. This is not a formality: a plan for "stop the pain" and a plan for "put everything right" look different.

Examination and X-rays
All the teeth, the gums and the bite are examined and the necessary X-rays taken. Hidden caries and inflammation at the root show up only there.

A plan in stages
The dentist sets the treatment out step by step and explains what is urgent and what can wait. You decide whether to do it all or in parts.

Estimate and booking
The plan comes with a cost estimate. Reception finds you a time and explains the Tervisekassa benefit if you are entitled to it.

After the procedure

The plan and the estimate are yours to keep. You can take time to think — nothing is lost.
If anything in the plan is unclear, call reception: the dentist will ring back and explain, at no extra charge.
Timings in the estimate are approximate: if your condition changes while you think it over, the plan is recalculated.

Frequently asked questions

How long does the consultation take?: About half an hour. If the case is complex and several dentists need to look at it, more time is set aside — mention it when you book.
Do I have to start treatment straight away?: No. The plan and the estimate stay with you, and you can take time to think. Nothing is lost.
What should I bring?: Any previous X-rays you have and a list of medicines you take regularly. That is enough.
What makes up the cost of treatment?: The examination and diagnostics, the work itself and the materials. At the consultation the dentist does not estimate roughly but costs it line by line: what we do, what each part costs and in what order. You take the plan away with you, so you can think it over or compare. If something else turns up during treatment, we call and agree it with you rather than presenting it in the chair.
